Small Talk

by admin on March 11, 2010

I’ve been enjoying “Practicing His Presence,” by Brother Lawrence this week.

“I disapprove of the usual practice of talking ’small talk’ whenever we meet, and holding a veil over our souls. If we are so impoverished that we have nothing to reveal but small talk, then we need to struggle for more richness of soul.”

Reasons

by admin on February 8, 2010

This video is so great. I would love to have it on our church website. The problem is, at the end of the video it has another church’s name on it, so it could be confusing for visitors to our website to see and wonder, what church is that? I’ve noticed that there are several churches who have this video, each with their own church name on it. So I’m wondering who owns the video? And can I somehow edit the video to eliminate the church name at the end?

31

by admin on February 3, 2010

Today I am 31. If there is one thing I long for and pray for this year for me, it is to grow in wisdom. Today, I find myself in a completely different and infinitely more challenging circumstance than one year ago, as I now pastor a new church development in Southern California. I realize how little wisdom I actually have, and how much needed it is for me to be able to embody God’s wisdom in the life of the ministry to which God has called me. I am so grateful for the grace of God, who longs to impart God’s wisdom on me as a gift. I trust that as I pray for wisdom, I will receive it.

Thank you, Lord, for the gift of my life, and the enormous gifts of family and friends. Life with God in community with others is the best possible life to live.

Thought for the Day

by admin on February 2, 2010

“And you, too, youthful reader, will realize the Vision (not the idle wish) of your heart, be it base or beautiful, or a mixture of both, for you will always gravitate toward that which you, secretly, most love. Into your hands will be placed the exact results of your own thoughts; you will receive that which you earn; no more, no less. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your Vision, your Ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration…

In all human affairs there are efforts, and there are results, and the strength of the effort is the measure of the result. Chance is not. “Gifts,” powers, material, intellectual, and spiritual possessions are the fruits of effort; they are thoughts completed, objects accomplished, visions realized.

The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart–this you will build your life by, this you will become.”

–From “As a Man Thinketh” by James Allen

Soka University

January 27, 2010

When I first began serving as pastor of Cornerstone, I spent a decent amount of time talking with mentors, professors and pastors who I consider to be exceptional preachers to ask their advice about preaching. Even though as the only pastor of a small church, I have a multitude of tasks and ministries in the [...]

Pat Robertson’s statement

January 16, 2010

Once again, in response to yet another tragedy, Pat Robertson makes another atrociously heretical statement. His claim was that God was punishing Haiti, that they are “cursed” because they “made a pact with the devil.” It is a horrendous statement that has no scriptural support nor, in any way, does it reflect the character and [...]

New Year’s Eve

December 31, 2009

Today was a gorgeous day in Dana Point. I’m watching the sun set over the bluff as I write. Often times, I find myself complaining. It’s one of my struggles, I guess. My tendency is to complain about things. Not always, but more than I’d like to admit. But today was one of those days [...]

tamale

December 23, 2009

It was 8:45am. I was driving my forest green Subaru Outback, which needs a new timing belt (among other things). Nearing the church office this morning, I pulled into the Arco Station. I was pumping gas when a nice old man discreetly approached me to sell me some tamales. I got the sense that he [...]
